Frequently Asked Questions



Instruments usually go out within three business days even during our busy season in August-October, though we do our best to ship them sooner. All orders within the continental US are shipped UPS or USPS unless otherwise requested. Those needing specific information about any aspect of shipping are welcome to call us at (847)970 3797.


Not only are our prices for strings, books, accessories, etc. competitive with those of much larger companies, but we pride ourselves on the speed with which we process orders. If ordered before 12PM CT on a weekday, most Standard orders for in-stock items (excepting instruments) will normally be shipped out that same day, or the next business day at the latest. Sales and rental instruments may require 3-5 business days to prepare before shipping, though we do our best to ship them out sooner. Standard orders ship via USPS (Post Office) or UPS Ground.



Please note that UPS does not deliver on Saturday or Sunday; a UPS Next Day Air order placed on Friday will arrive on Monday, and a 2nd Day Air order placed on Friday will arrive on Tuesday.


Defective Items: We will replace defective items or items damaged in shipping; simply contact us at (847) 970 3797 or at [email protected] within 15 days of your original order, and we'll send a replacement at no charge. We will ask that you return the defective item to us; we can either send a prepaid postage label, or simply reimburse you for your shipping costs when we receive the defective item.
Other returns: Items purchased in our store may be returned to the store within 30 days of the purchase invoice date for a refund or exchange. If you purchased an item from us Online or over the phone, you can ship it back within 30 days of the purchase date for a refund or exchange. You will be refunded the amount you paid minus shipping charges. Shipping charges are non refundable on returned or exchanged items that are not defective.

Non-Returnable Items

The following items are returnable only if defective: strings, shoulder rests, shoulder sponges, pitch pipes, reeds, cleaners, polishes, and polishing cloths. Cassettes, CDs, and DVDs, may be returned for credit only if they are in their original, sealed packaging. If defective, these items will only be exchanged for the same product.

Classic Violins only accepts returns made within the first 30 days from shipment. For processing all returns, the original invoice/sales receipt is required.


Should you wish to return or exchange your rental instrument, please visit our store or contact us at (847) 970 3797 for a Return Authorization and return instructions.

We recommend using FedEx or UPS when returning items and please use the original packaging and boxes. Be sure to cover the original shipping address on the outside carton. For your protection, be sure to retain the tracking number. Please insure the package for the value of the merchandise. Unfortunately, we cannot refund your original shipping charges. For exchanges of a rental instrument (when switching to a bigger size) we will cover the shipping of the instrument to you and you must pay for the return shipping of the exchanged instrument. The instrument that is being exchanged should be returned to us within 10 days after you have received the new instrument.


Please follow packing instructions carefully when returning instruments, and insure the items for their full value. You are responsible for any damage that occurs to the instrument during shipment back to us.

Trial Period

When you schedule an appointment to try instruments, we will prepare several choices within your budget for you to play and evaluate in our trial room here at the shop. You are free to try as many or as few as you please. Once you have decided on an instrument, we offer a one-week free trial period so that you may have the opportunity to play it in different settings and for different people. If after a week you decide that the instrument is not the one for you, we will invite you to continue trying others in the shop. You can also feel free to bring instruments from other shops to compare with our selection. We are sure you will find our instruments to be incomparable! 


Qualified customers can take advantage of financing for instrument purchases. With a down payment of at least 30% of the price of the instrument, the rest of the balance may be paid in up to 6 interest-free monthly installments. 


All instruments sold by our shop are warranted for one year from the date of purchase. During this period we will replace or repair the bridge, sound-post, pegs, tuners, or chin rest if needed, free of charge. The warranty also covers certain adjustments needed to maintain proper playing condition of the instrument, such as bridge, sound-post, and string height adjustment. For as long as you own an instrument purchased from our shop you are entitled to free occasional check-ups. We recommend bringing the instrument for a check up at least once a year.  

Trade-In Policy

We offer a generous trade-in option for potential buyers. You will be presented with a fair offer based on the overall quality and condition of your current instrument. Please inquire for more details.

Strings that have been installed on an instrument are non-returnable.

 How Refunds Are Processed:
In-Store Purchases: A cash refund is given for cash purchases under $10.
In-Store Purchases: A refund check is mailed for cash purchases over $10.
Online & In-Store Purchases: A refund check is mailed for all personal check purchases.
Online & In-Store Purchases: A credit refund is issued to the same credit card used for a purchase.

While we try to process refunds as quickly as possible, sometimes it may be a few weeks before your refund appears on your credit card statement. If you have any questions about returns or our return policy, feel free to call (847) 970-03797.

*Unfortunately we cannot provide a refund or exchange for any string that has been installed on an instrument.
